The Peoples Health Champions Program honored Irwin “Jim” Boulet on Dec. 17, 2017, for donating more than 900 pounds of fresh produce from his farm to the Second Harvest Food Bank at age 82. Boulet was recognized during the New Orleans Saints game against the New York Jets for doing something extraordinary after age 65 and proving that excellence is achieved through experience.
On Dec. 12, 2012, Boulet delivered his bounty of fresh turnips to the Second Harvest Food Bank—his first crop dedicated to the organization. Since then, he has farmed 30 acres of land solely for the food bank and has donated more than 330,000 pounds of produce to the food bank in the past five years.
Today, at 88 years old, Boulet challenges himself to serve his community and feed more and more people with each year’s harvest. He’s driven by the conviction that if you have the ability to help those in need, you also have the responsibility to do so. “To me, there is a great feeling you get from helping people who can’t say thank you. That’s how I define my life now—what I can do to improve their lives where they don’t have to worry about food.” For more about Boulet’s achievements and mission to help others, visit http://champions.peopleshealth.com/meet-the-champions.
